n 1991, at just 9 years old, Carter met the man who would change his life: Birdman. The two were introduced through Birdman’s brother, Slim – lil wayne was a fan, endlessly calling the Cash Money offices.

The Cash Money Records co-founder became a form of mentor and father, filling the void left by the deаth of Wayne’s stepfather – both Wayne and Birdman referred to each other as father and son. He pushed Wayne into pursuing music, quickly applauding his talent on Cash Money tracks under the nаme ‘Baby D’, and even leaving freestyles on Birdman’s voicemail.

Wayne’s life was saved when an off-duty police officer drove him to hospital, with the bullet barely missing his heart. As soon as he recovered, he thew himself into school, becoming an honor roll student. However, when Cash Money blew up, he couldn’t resist his calling to rap, and dropped out to join the Hоt Boys at 14 years old.
